The Bridgespan Group, a consulting company affiliated with Bain and Company, recently published a report entitled "The Non-Profit Sector's Leadership Deficit" that predicted the need for as many as half a million new senior executives to replace retiring non-profit managers over the next decade.
Marc Freedman, founder of the think tank Civic Ventures, sees a major opportunity for private-sector executives who are considering shifting direction in the latter half of their professional careers. "Bringing boomers searching for meaning to non-profits looking for leaders is logical and necessary, but it won't be easy. It will demand breathtaking innovation – not only through rewriting the career trajectory and helping experienced professionals bridge into the nonprofit sector, but also through creating the infrastructure for large numbers of nonprofit leaders to sign up for another, albeit renegotiated, tour of duty."
